Project Overview

CN Glass was entrusted with the restoration of the glass roof at Salisbury Cathedral’s Refectory—a project aimed at improving energy efficiency, enhancing visibility, and ensuring long-term durability. The project was completed 10 days ahead of schedule, delivering a brighter, more comfortable space for visitors while preserving the Cathedral’s historic charm.

The Challenge

After 25 years, the old roof units had reached the end of their lifespan. Many were broken down, difficult to clean, and obstructed the stunning views of the Cathedral. The aged glazing reduced energy efficiency and no longer met modern performance standards. The challenge was to replace the roof units with high-performance glazing while maintaining the architectural integrity of the building.

Our Solution

Over 5 weeks, our dedicated team of 7 engineers removed 90 old roof units and installed 108 brand-new, high-performance insulated glass units. We also replaced 36 clerestory windows, including 12 with Teleflex electric openers for improved ventilation, and updated 6 flat roof lights to modernise the space while preserving its character.

The project featured COOL-LITE® SKN 176 (II) solar control glass, a high-performance glazing solution offering superior thermal insulation, reduced solar heat gain, and a sleek, neutral aesthetic. This ensures year-round comfort, lowers energy costs, and enhances natural light while maintaining privacy.

To meet the structural requirements of the project, the ThermGard TG50 Aluminium Rafter Glazing Bar System from Lonsdale Metal Company was selected. With rafters extending up to 8 metres, intermediate support was provided by the existing steel sub-structure, ensuring durability and long-term performance.

Sustainability & Environmental Impact

Sustainability was at the forefront of this project. In partnership with May Glass Recycling Ltd, we carefully managed material disposal, successfully recycling 2,354 kg of aluminium and 4,269 kg of glass, minimising waste and supporting responsible environmental practices.

Why CN Glass?

Salisbury Cathedral selected CN Glass not only for our cost-effective solution but also for our strong industry reputation. According to Gary Price, Clerk of Works:

We undertook a tendering exercise in line with our financial regulations and part of the due diligence is to take up references.

Not only did we find CN Glass to be the most cost effective but we were delighted to also see all of the positive references from others who had engaged them on similar projects and/or with similar buildings noting their ability to overcome minor problems with no fuss, the quality of workmanship, how collaborative they were and how polite all their staff were and I have to say, now our project is drawing to a close, we would echo all of that.”
